I am doing B.Tech. in Aerospace Engineering in one of the IITs. Is it possible to get admission in a different branch like Computer science or Electrical Engineering in M.Tech. in any of the IITs through GATE?

Will I gate the same opportunities as the guy who did both M.tech. and B.Tech. from Computer Science ?

Answer:
Hi, You are allowed to write the GATE exam for any discipline. However, even if you score highly, most IITs (if not all) require you to have a Bachelor's in CS/IT to be admitted to M.Tech in CS, and EE/ECE to be admitted to M.Tech in ECE/EE Getting a good GATE score can be pretty difficult too. More than 1,50,000 people write the CS GATE exam, and only the top 700-1000 even get a call for interview. If you are looking for a career change and you are not particularly into circuit branches, I'd suggest that you try CAT.

Yes. You will have the same opportunities, once you have the same skills. And it is not so difficult, considering that most people in the M.Tech. program are not Bachelors from IITs. For an M.Tech. in Computer Science, none of the old IITs impose a restriction on your field of study during your bachelors. Things are different for EE.

If you are already an IIT student, IITs will love to have you with open arms especially if your CGPA is good. 1. If your CGPA is above 8, you are eligible to get direct admission in your own branch at any IIT of your choice. No need to write GATE! If you want to move to a significantly better IIT (e.g. IIT Mandi to IITB) then you may have to appear for an interview. 2. If you want to change departments for M.Tech, you need to write GATE in the new subject. You can't get direct admission. If you do well in GATE, you can shift branches. 3. For MS (Research) all IIT students are exempt from GATE even if you are changing branches. However, there is an interview involved. If you are changing streams because you are genuinely interested in research and the new branch - you will in all probability be accepted. But professors can spot if your only reason for changing is for higher package.

Yes it is possible. You need to opt for interdisciplinary course. Also you need to give your GATE exam in the relevant area, viz CS or ECE. Your project and other courses should be related according to your uopcoming related area. Try to get minor degree in CS if possible for you.
