Why do MOST people seek out a cat, as opposed to a rabbit, if they don't want a dog as a pet? Why cats?

I mean, rabbits in many ways have more advantages than a cat in keeping them, so why do most ppl go for cats as their next best choice after dogs?

Cats are very independent animals, the only thing one has to worry about when it comes to a cat is their attitude. Dogs need more attention given to them which is why they have a show named, "The Dog Whisperer".

People don't know how cool rabbits really are as pets. All of mine have been fun affectionate and clean.

I had read somewhere that a cat purrs at a certain frequency that relieves stress and even physical pain.

Rabbits are trickier to have as a pet,if you want to interact with it more or have it live in your home like a cat or dog that has free rein in your home or yard. If you were to just want to raise rabbits in a cage with little attention, like for eating, then they are very easy to care for and would be much lower maintenance than a cat. BUt if you want it to live with you, then it's really tricky to keep both the rabbit safe and healthy and your possessions like floors, furniture, draperies and other things. Rabbits are gnawers and diggers. True they can be litter box trained but often they will leave their 'droppings', the pellet ones, all over your house when free, even if they will urinate in their box. And they will dig in their litter box and spread the litter all over. It's possible to leash train them but it's not easy, much easier to get a cat used to a leash. Their diet is trickier than a cat's and often they will eat plants, furniture, fabrics and that make them sick. You need to bunny proof your home, no electrical wires they can reach and possibly chew on. They might eat your rugs or dig through your carpeting if left to themselves. Also, rabbit litter boxes can be very smelly quickly! Their urine can be quite potent :( Sometimes a buck will spray, though it's better when you neuter them. Either sex will require altering to keep them a quiet less aggressive pet, even if you never plan on breeding them or having them with other rabbits as they are very territorial and can be aggressive to people and other types of pets. Cats are very interactive with people, they will seek you out for attention and want to be petted. Most rabbits will not be as loving as a cat, though they are a few that like being around people with some taming and attention. Cats don't require as much one to one play time as a rabbit needs to keep it alert and happy. PLus I like the fact that cats can wander in your home as they wish without much damage or worrying what they will do. They can hop up on your bed to visit with you but a rabbit can't do that. You have to bring the rabbit to your bed or couch and place him there. Rabbits also have more of a temper than a cat and will let you know when they are upset with bites or growls, much m9ore than most cats.

Rabbits run away and/or get eaten by dogs.

Cats are one of the most cool non-apex predators on the planet. They are smart, agile, affectionate, full of character, and they eat rabbits.

Because we like cats. To me, rabbits are either snake food or human food, not pets.

I suspect there are two reasons: 1) Tradition. Keeping cats as domesticated animals has a much longer tradition than rodents (which prior to the Industrial Revolution were simply crop-eating pests) 2) Humans like to anthropomorphize (assign human-like characteristics) to their pets. Cats can make very human-like facial expressions. Rabbits don't.
