Should the internet be taxed?

Why is Amazon fighting having internet sales taxed when loss revenues are hurting state trying to provide services?

    Because once they start charging sales taxes, they lose one big incentive for people to shop there. It is purely a financial reason on Amazon's part. It is also a hassle to collect and distribute the sales taxes to various states, but certainly not that difficult. BTW, Amazon does already collect sales taxes for a few states (which have required/compelled them to do so.) When Amazon only had distribution centers in a few states, they had more of a leg to stand on, because they had no "brick and mortar" presence in most states. As they have grown, they have also opened distribution centers all over the country, and lost their reason for declining to collect sales taxes. Kat

Kat - somehow I got to this page so I thought I would annoy Amazon with a question of which I knew the answer - although you provided some good details. By the way, the tax collection and payment is pretty easy - compared to the distribution system they have developed for delivering products. thanks - I like Amazon - but internet retailers need charge and pay the sales tax. michae

Well, sorry to disappoint you, but no one at Amazon looks at anything on this site, ever. Askville is owned by Amazon, but is operated totally separately from the Amazon site. It would be nice if Amazon management poked their heads in here occasionally, but it doesn't happen. The few employees who work at Askville are employed through A9. The rest of us just show up and ask or answer questions, the same as you. :) Kat
