Why are cinema seats always booked in a certain pattern?

  • I was trying to book cinema tickets to go see the new Star Trek at the IMAX, and noticed that no matter what day I choose, there always seems to be this circle of unused seats. http://imgur.com/a/8C7GM I can understand why the seats in the front and centre aren't taken, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why the seats on the sides are taken.

This is done due to the acoustics of the theatre, the marked seats offer the best possible sound and viewing angle. Which is why people prefer to sit there. Huge Michael Cannon's answer is also correct btw, the software programs it so that the seats with the best acoustics are sold first.

In each of the pictures theres the exact same set of bookings for the lower-edge seats. On the left it goes: 1 2 3 4 5, on the right it's: 1 2 3 4 6. This happens in each film showing which hints the seats may be automatically booked for some reason.

I have to say, I believe this is different in different places. I was quite surprised when I went to a cinema in Kolkata (I'm a 5- other -countries/continents -traveled/worked- American) to discover that the seats I ( and majority of Americans)  prefer are considered "low status" and therefore less expensive!!! Hilarious!!!
