How To Get Free Tld Domain?

ES TLD Registration help!

  • How can a US citizen register a .ES domain? My last name ends in "es" and I am very intent on registering the domain hack for it which means that I need a ".es" TLD. Since this is a spannish TLD, I have run into problems completing this process because they seem to require you either be a citizen of spain or have a business in spain. Now considering I have neither of those I am at an impass. Does anyone know how I can get around this? Is there a quick and dirty way to set up a small business to get a VAT number (from what I have read this is seems to be a big no)? Is there some registrar I can pay a fee to that will bypass this?

  • Answer:

I used gandi.net to buy a .es domain a couple of weeks ago, after my normal registrar insisted on proof of Spanish something or other (I'm in Europe but not Spain). No problems at all.

I bought one from EuroDNS.com once without any spanish citizenship, business, etc. it was 18 EUR excluding VAT, this was in 2007 so things may have changed (I'm looking at the receipt), but I just checked the website it at least lets me add .es domains to my cart and puts a little flag there that means "No Restrictions".

Estonia (.ee) has a similar requirement, but some of the registrars get around that by having their own lawyer register it for you. It might be a service you'll be able to find at one of the registrars.

I was able to buy an .es domain from mydomain.com a few years ago. They asked no questions and I have no connection to Europe. Perhaps things have changed?

I also have a last name that ends in "es", and I'm not a citizen of Spain and don't have a business there. I've had my domain registered through marcaria.com for several years, so it's definitely possible. However it was about 10 USD more than what jeb's EuroDNS.com link is quoting, so I'm bookmarking them for next year's renewal.

Thanks everyone! Gandi.net worked when about 20 others failed.
