Bike quilt patterns?
-
Where can I find patterns for quilts that feature bicycles or bicycle parts? I've been wanting to make a wall quilt for my honey's office that is somehow bicycle-related (he is a randonneur and all-around bike geek). I haven't been able to find any patterns that involve bicycles or bicycle parts, however. Neither of us is into the homespun, scrappy quilt thing, so I'd prefer to find something with a modern feeling and bright colors (something designed for Bali fabrics would be especially wonderful); can be scrupulously accurate or stylized. I'm a fairly experienced quilter and open to different techniques, though I particularly like applique (especially wool felt), paper piecing, embroidery, and beading. Thank you very much for your help!

I don't know of any bicycle-related patterns, but maybe you could incorporate Etsuko Furuya's bicycle fabric? I just made my own. I used the setup for sunbonnet sue, and then just did some stylized (unicycles, but whatever) cycles.. each one was a circle, a rod for the fork, and a seat. you'd need a few more pieces but not many.

There are a number of traditional patterns that might translate well (done in modern colours and prints), for instance, the http://www.nebraskahistory.org/images/sites/mnh/patchwork_lives/822.jpg https://shop.countrythreads.com/product.php?productid=937&cat=7&page=1 and the http://www.nebraskahistory.org/images/sites/mnh/patchwork_lives/8.jpg http://shop.countrythreads.com/product.php?productid=1451&cat=59&page=3 in the right proportions and colours could look bicycle-y. Circles can be tricky, but if you are used to paper piecing you'd likely be ok. Another direction to consider would be to use crazy quiting techniques to buld a http://quilttaffy.blogspot.com/2010/01/wheels-giveaway.html of where you like to ride (the example is just a print, but that kind of thing could be appliqued). Finally, http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?action=profile%3Bu=127643%3Bsa=showTopics or http://carinascraftblog.wardi.dk/2009/07/bicycle-patterns-bogof.html http://carinascraftblog.wardi.dk/2009/07/cycle-patterns.html over a pattern of your choice could work too.
