Strategic Partnerships: How can an animation studio focused on explainer videos partner with VC firms, PR agencies and brand consultants in the startup / healthcare / education space?

  • We are based in Canada but we have clients globally. We do everything in house (storyboarding, script writing, animation). We would be willing to work on projects in collaboration with the right partner at minimal cost in order to build rapport and establish brand recognition. We want to build a network with firms in NYC, San Fran, Vancouver and Toronto. We also have a desire to establish relationships with firms in the UK, China and India. We would welcome an opportunity to cross sell our services with firms who offer consulting services/solutions that would compliment what we do.

    Without knowing much about your firm, I'll assume that the partners you have in mind have a lot more to offer you (in terms of sales opportunities) than you will likely be able to offer them. You may be much more successful in developing a referral-based relationship than a true strategic partnership. At any rate, the first step towards either is to start small. Choose a market where you have several potential partners. Do your research—make sure these firms don't have the capabilities you have & that the firms execs don't have ownership or family interests in same. Then, find out who their clients are, follow everyone on social, & look for opportunities to engage. (Another assumption: you have decent content & social media presence. If not, return to beginning!) For that pivotal introduction point, consider offering your services for free to support a charitable event or startup competition. You must execute perfectly & ask for nothing. You may get nothing but goodwill. But these are the right way to get your skills noticed by the creative community. If no appropriate opportunities come up, choosing a cause and publicizing it broadly. You can lead the way, inviting prospective partners to participate. Many firms already have their own causes but might be able to spare an intern. That's a foot...okay a sneaker...in the door. One thought to get you started! Others will surely chime in with more.
