How to get into the music industry?

How did you get your foot in the door with the music industry?

  • I'm somewhat late to the game. I'm a 25 year old who chose a career in marketing instead of focusing on music. I'm changing course now to go back to music. Ultimately I would like to be a producer and I'm currently teaching myself Ableton and music production, but I don't have experience in the music industry. How can I get my foot in the door in the music industry to gain more experience to become a producer eventually? Even if it's just an internship or anything. Please tell me how you got into the music industry.

  • Answer:

I mean. My band got moderately successful through a classic combination of dumb luck, right place/right time, and having friends in the industry. As a result, we were pretty quickly able to enter contests, open for bigger bands, record an EP, and play some of Denver's best music venues. My best advice: go to a lot of concerts. Aim for unknown bands. Young bands. Meet them. Because they're the ones who need opportunities. If you find them, they'll bring you consistent work. Network. And practice your craft. You'll be up and running pretty damn fast.

Produce music, then produce some more music.market it and work your way up the charts. That is all.

Here are some simple ideas; Open your own studio and either advertise or approach people. You’d be surprised who you can find on Craigslist or Youtube. There are a lot of indie groups who can use help.If you went to college for production, you met and worked with many musicians who may be in the business, reach out to them. A friend of mine went to Berkley and traveled the world for five years gigging with classmates and sleeping on couches. He then joined the Navy and now travels the world in their band.Even if you are not a performing musician, join the local musicians union and network with those guys. Attend their gigs and concerts, offer advice, pass out cards.Looking for the big time? Friends will get you in the door otherwise, send out resumés and demos, for what that’s worth. Sometimes you have to build it yourself and get lucky.

getting in is easy.just go get some gigs.the hard part is making much money, or any money.lots of competition, people willing to play for nothing, etc.you have to love it, be good at it, be willing and able to live on nothing, AND be very lucky.even then you probably will never make more than the average IT guy or body shop worker.wle
