Why does my web page expire?

Why I'm getting "Welcome to nginx!" page instead of Facebook, Google, Yahoo! or some other well-known web page?

  • In brief, nginx is a popular free open source web server software. That is - a software to build Internet web infrastructure. It is typically used as a high performance, high concurrency edge web server, powering millions of domains worldwide. "Welcome to nginx!" is one of the diagnostics pages that might be shown by a web site running on nginx. Please check the following page for a more detailed explanation: http://nginx.org/en/docs/welcome_nginx_facebook.html

  • Answer:

Because this page is on *your* server.  Google is not, as awesome as that would be. It's not really a diagnostic page.  There's a folder where you put your website files.  Rather than leaving it empty by default, Nginx puts a friendly "I'm here!" page there.  You're free to change it to whatever you want.  The folder is often /usr/share/nginx.
