Neema, good question and good to hear you are earning a History degree at the University of Maryland. I have some inside information for you but I will not place the most important elements of this here to this particular forum. I can and will tell you that it is not impossible, that it can be done, and as you have the drive there will be leg work you will have to do on your own accord (I sense you already know this so I am not attempting to insult your intelligence level here). I am including several links for you below ~ I would suggest just a couple of things that "Yun" above me has sort of touched upon: a) if you have a Facebook Account be careful who your "friends" are ~ you will later have to share this with some interviewer, b) continue and complete your baccalaureate degree, c) open a USAJobs.gov account and begin to search and scroll through the ONLY mechanism the U.S. Government goes to in order of testing/interviewing/hiring potential candidates, and lastly ~ I would urge you to also consider military opportunities (other than DIA link I provided below) with the US Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard ~ many good people started here and are in today very rewarding careers within the US and/or living abroad. Best of luck young lady ~ have a safe Memorial Day weekend! Semper Fidelis, Gerry

This is one of those situations where it may come down to more who you know than what you know. In order to get into an organization that does things like that, you generally have to know someone that is already in that type of work that will give you a way into the exclusive club that is that type of work. There are some important things that you have to take into account with this goal. It will affect your personal life. Working in that kind of area requires a security clearance. When you go for things like that, they check your background and your personal life to make sure that they can trust you with important information. That means: no drugs, no real criminal record, no serious drama in your public life, etc. For the highest levels of clearance, they even look at things like if you've had an affair, since that deals with your truthfulness and loyalty, and it can be a way for someone to get a hold over you.

The CIA and NSA are always recruiting people. I'm sure you could look at their websites, find the name or phone number of the recruting or personnel office, and have a chat with them. They would probably be happy to tell you all the (non-classified) information about this. And of course the private sector needs people like that too, not necessarily to do industrial espionage, but just to advise them about countries they might be going into as new markets, etc. My wife is a history professor, and every once in a while the Business School at her university asks her to come over and give the MBA students a talk about some aspect of Chinese history, because some of them will be going into international business and will need to know that kind of thing.
