How do you make rectangular windows Icons?

• So I have a bunch of video files which at the moment have icons that are just rectangular screenshots with the "film-like" sides (like when you have a movie on your computer, for example). I'm sure you know what I mean. I want to change those icons to my own personal images. Having looked around, it seems like the only way to change SPECIFIC file icons is by creating shortcuts for each one and then those can have their icons changed. So, I took my images and prepared to make icons using the various online icon makers etc. However, the only option is to make a square icon, which I don't want. I'd like to make standing rectangular icons (like movie posters, for example). Does anyone know how I can do this? I'm assuming it's possible because a lot of file icons on windows 7 are not square. And I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know how I can change the file icons themselves? Or am I right in saying you have to make shortcuts? Thanks very much!

  i don't think you can do it for a video file the shape of the video file thumbnail is based on the default media player you use to open that video file for example the thumbnail will look a certain way if you set divx player as default media player and another way if you set vlc player as the default player just stick to making shortcuts and adding your pics
