How do I hook up a alternator to a plain battery?

I changed the alternator in my 2005 Mazda 6 2.6. Now the main fuse blows when I hook up the battery.?

  • Dropped the alternator when installing. Any suggestions

  • Answer:

I have to ask, did dropping the alt cause damage to it in any way? If so there's the problem. Try this, get a 12V test light, leave the battery cable connection to the alt off. Hook up both the connections on the battery. Now take and hook one end of the test light up to the battery charge wire that's suppose to go on the alt and take the other end of the test light and touch the place where the wire is suppose to go on the alt, if the test light comes on the alt is shorted out. If not you have a bigger problem.

Take the alternator back where you bought it and tell them it blows the fuse. No need to tell them you dropped it but they will test it and get you another. Dropping it shouldn't short anything out but I've gotten alternators that were bad from the factory, especially if it's a reman.

Try it with the alternator battery wire disconnected.

Buy another alternator and don't drop it.
