How long to season a humidor?

How to Season my new Humidor?

  • Very excited got a 50 count glass top great looking cigar humidor. It came with a humidor hygrometer that measures the moisture or whatever that I can read from the front of the box. Also came with a humidifier. What do I do w/ the humidifier, what do I put in it and where to I put it in the box? What else do I need (shotglass of distilled water or something like that or some beads that help, completely lost)

  • Answer:

Depending on the type of humidifier device (probably a "Puck" type right?) you'll want to use a propylene glycol solution in that, but we'll come back to it. To season your humidor, you will want to use only distilled water, take a soft cloth and dampen it with the distilled water, wipe the inside of the humi down gently with it, you aren't trying to wet the wood, just really getting any dust out. Next take a small dish, fill it with distilled water and place it inside the humi. Make sure the humi is in the spot you intend to display it, this ensures even temperature and airflow in that spot. Leave the water in minimum 3 days, check the hydrometer, you should shoot for a humidity between 65% and 70% at a room temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. If your hydrometer reads in that range, and remains steady, you can remove the dish of water, and put your humidifying device in (here's where the puck goes into play....you can get propylene glycol solution at most cigar shops, or use distilled water), monitor the humidity for awhile, then begin adding your cigars.
