Computer cannot start Windows XP. What is happening?

My computer beeps several times on start up. I am running windows xp.?

  • My computer beeps several times on start up. I am running windows xp and have noticed that when the 'x' icon is clicked in the top right corner of a page that the program will not terminate. Additionally, the computer will respond to no other commands after this. How can I find out what problem is causing the beeping? I suspect the beeping is an alert that something is wrong that also may be causing the program problems.

These sounds are called beep codes, and you are correct, they are a waring that you are having a hardware problem. Depending on the sequence of the beep they tell you just what the problem. Since you didn't describe the beep sequence I E, one short and two long, etc, do this. Open a Google search and type "beep codes" without the quotes and then hit enter. The top few search sites will explain just what is going on with your computer.

You need more ram, computer beeping on start up means it had no ram, window not closing or responding due to not having enough ram (and CPU). Ram is cheap and the first gig or 2 helps alot.
