Camping choice in Yosemite?

  • I have a couple of campground reservations in Yosemite for the Memorial Day weekend. One is upper pines and the other is yosemite lakes. I am confused which one to pick. The more obvious choice is Upper pines, but it is a long weekend and it is going to be so crowded. Someone help me make the choice

    You don't say what site in the upper pine, as some sites are quite large and very close to the river, in order to compare what you got. Yosemite lakes is a private operation outside the park. So if you have reservations inside the park and don't want to fight the traffic getting in and out of the park stay at upper pines. Do note that getting a reservation in the park is a very lucky shot specially for the holiday weekend, it won't happen again in your lifetime likely so I would go with that.

There are a lot of campgrounds and Hotel/Motels that claim to be, at Yosemite, Gateway to Yosemite, or they name a pond Yosemite Lake and use the implication to confuse tourists. Upper Pines Campground is in the Park in the heart of Yosemite Valley. Yosemite Lakes Campground off Highway 120 is outside the park 6 miles from the entrance, expect delays from 30 to 90 minutes at the gate. From Yosemite Lakes Campground to Yosemite Valley is a little over 30 miles and can easily be a 2 hour trip each way on a busy week-end. There is another place that calls itself Yosemite Lakes south of Yosemite off Highway 41, not very familar with it, it's even further away from the valley. I live 30 minutes from Yosemite and am speaking from firsthand information.
