What are good daily exercises/stretches for your back?

To keep it healthy and prevent slipped disks and other problems later in life? I do a stretch almost every morning where I basically touch my toes and bend my head down so that the stretching is focused on my lower back area. It has a "good kind of pain" to it sometimes, and feels great afterwards. Sometimes, I also do trunk twists that crack my back. Are these two exercises safe to do? I ask because the past two days I've had a (very) dull lower back ache, and I'm wondering if it is because of those exercises.
