Where can a 15-year-old work in Michigan?

I live in wisconsin and work in upper michigan my employer is withholding Michigan state taxes?

  • I asked them to withhold Wisconsin and not Michigan but refused. Is that even legal? i dont want to have to file 2 state taxes at the end of the year.

  • Answer:

You have to pay income tax in the state you physically work in. You will have to file a non-resident return for Michigan to report the income earned in Michigan. You will also file a resident return in Wisconsin where you will report ALL of your income. You will also report taxes paid to another jurisdiction (Michigan) to get credit for those taxes withheld. -_________________________ "who has to pay for my tax prep and filing fees" YOU do. You chose to work in Michigan, so it is YOUR responsibility to prepare the tax returns. There is no law that says you have to hire a professional preparer. You can prepare and file your taxes yourself. Hiring a professional preparer is a convenience, not a requirement.

The answer to your additional info...is you have to pay for the tax preparation. Why would any one else pay for it...you choose to live in WI and work in MI? The same reasoning applies to any thoughts about taking mileage expenses back and forth to work (not deductible). Hope this helps!

Your employer is following state law. You will have to file both a resident WI and non-resident MI tax return. One state tax offsets the other.

he is a Mich employer and is responsible to Mich for employee taxes filing your taxes is a personal matter, not the responsibility of your employer
