What antidepressants are the least likely to cause weight gain?
-
My mom has struggled with depression for a while. She won't get therapy because she's got so much going on she says she doesn't have the time, plus I think it's a pride thing. She won't take antidepressants because she's worried about weight gain. It took her over a year to lose the weight after my sister was born. I know a lot of people are against antidepressants, but please don't answer if you feel that way. I just would really appreciate helpful answers.

Answer:
I was only on Zoloft for about four weeks. It really ****** with my brain, but that may or may not be the case if your mom took it. It didn't cause me to gain weight, but I lost my appetite. I used to weigh 115lbs (I'm 5"4) but I dropped down to 108 and looked anorexic when I was on them. Not the best med. Zoloft is an antidepressant, I personally haven't had good experiences with that genre of medication and neither did a friend of mine. There's also Lamictal which I am taking right now, it's not an anti-depressant but it is used to treat epilepsy, bipolar, and my friend is being prescribed it for normal depression. It's also not usually known to cause weight gain. I think it's a great med and so does everyone I know whos taken it. Sadly however no one on the internet can really tell you what she needs. If she somehow started taking a random antidepressant or mood enhancer/stabilizer without being prescribed it (Or even if she was prescribed by a psychiatrist, there's always a risk) it could make it worse. I suggest getting her in to see a psychiatrist somehow so they can find the right med for her. Doctors prescribe things based on the symptoms. There's a natural antidepressant called Saint Johns Wort (don't take if you're on another med though), and Inositol powder (also natural, I think you can buy both at a vitamin store or something) which really helps with irritability. Neither of which cause weight gain that I know of. She also might not need antidepressants, but a different type of medication. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer (I think anyway, don't quote me on that). I suggest having her try taking Vitamin D and B, I'm taking those with my meds because a lack of vitamin D can cause depression, and the B helps your body absorb the D. Omega Fish oil (whatever they're called) pills can also be beneficial. Just make sure it's mercury free. No matter what, she needs to see a doctor before taking any kind of med. EDIT: I also forgot about 5HTP as a natural supplement she could take, but I would look up any possible side effects or anything. I don't remember too much about it but its a good idea to do research on any/all of these.
