Help with downloading on bit torrent?
-
I'm trying to download a few CDs on bit torrent since just about everything on mediafire is missing now. The album finished downloading but now I have no idea what to do with it (like seeding or whatever that means). I double clicked on it and it took me to where the music is but they're all .ogg files. What do I do next? xxxx

Answer:
When you download a torrent, you're basically downloading the file from other computers. For that to happen, the people behind the "other computers" are seeding. Some/most private trackers (private torrent websites) require the members to seed or their account will be deleted, because it's considered nice. But you most probably aren't part of a private tracker, since you don't seem to know much about torrent downloading. Anyways, if you don't want to seed, you don't have to, but if you want to play nice, you should. Seeding WILL affect your broadband (your internet speed), but not too much, depending on the popularity of the torrent. So, once you've made the decision on whether or not to seed, either close Bittorrent, if you don't want to, or leave it open, to seed. Now—your files are in .ogg format. You could try opening them with a media/music application on your computer. But, if none of them support the format, download the free VLC app and then you will be able to listen to your files. If you want them in iTunes, or on your iPod or any other MP3 player that doesn't support .ogg's, simply convert the .ogg files to .mp3. Note: there will not be much of a quality decrease—or at least that you will be able to notice—because .ogg is pretty much like .mp3, only a tiny bit better. Enjoy your music!

You need to buy the albums like a decent human being, THAT's what you need to do next.

The file format is whatever the music was encoded in by the initial seeder (the guy everybody else got it from). You could encode them in MP3 or any other format you like, that takes some extra work and time, or you can just use them in OGG. Once the download is done, you can keep the torrent and seed so others can get it too (that's how you got it). Whenever you decide that it was on long enough (usually you look for a 1:1 ratio or at least 0.5:1) you can delete the torrent, just make sure you do not delete the files also.

Not sure what to do about the .ogg files, but I can explain seeding. Basically, how torrenting works is, instead of downloading the whole file from some central server, you're downloading it in bits and pieces from, well, everyone else who has downloaded it. So, seeding is just doing your part of the "upload to everyone else" part of the equation. To do it, just leave your bittorrent program running for a while, and make sure it's set to allow seeding (the default is generally yes). Though you might want to make sure you have something like peer2peer (I think it's called) also running, or your internet provider might start nagging you for copyright violations, if those CDs were copywritten. It's generally considered polite to seed until you've sent out at least half of what you've dl'ed, there will be a stat about that somewhere on your bittorrent program. As far as your files, it may just be that you dl'ed the wrong format... And, by the way, thank you for being the non-evil kind of music pirate (the "I am getting a free sample to see if I like it, then I'll buy it properly if I do" kind, not the "the world owes me free music" kind)--I wrote a relevant article: http://computersight.com/computers/semi-ethical-piracy/

If you download klite mega media codec pack full your windows media player will play almost any codec 2 seeding means your sending instead of receiving 3 to convert ogg to mp3 for mp3 player use quick media converter 4 to get files out of programs like bit torrent or uttorent and onto your desktop so that you no longer seed use a program called unlocker it will allow you to move or delete files in use
