Why do American football players wear that ridiculous outfit?
-
American football is rugby for wimps. Just watch a rugby match; it is played in shorts and a top and is a far tougher sport. Presumably, all that padding, helmets, face-guards etc is to prevent injury. Awwe

We're talking about 2 very different, equally great sports. We shouldn't be running them both down. If you love American football, you should enjoy rugby. And vice versa. I think the key difference in this discussion is the element of surprise. In American football, blindside hits are a way of life. A QB looking for a receiver gets nailed in the back. A RB cutting back is met by someone coming at them with a 15 yard head of steam. A WR looking a high ball into his hands get nailed in the ribs by an attacking safety. Looking away from your potential tackler and/or blocker is a part of the game. When you do that, you are opened up to a surprise hit. And they are violent attempts to dislodge man from ball. In rugby, these same kind of hits do happen, but not with anywhere near the frequency of American football. The nature of the game & strategy puts your attacker in your line of sight most of the time. Allowing you to prepare better to be hit, & preventing a lot of the more devastating blows. Most American football could be played without pads & the result would be scrapes & bruises galore. A few breaks & what not, but there are those handful of plays each game, where the hits are so violent that, without protective gear, they are truly dangerous. One last thing for all you people who aren't familiar with rugby. It is a sport for tough guys. No one is a skinny wimp like a lot of wide receivers or DBs. Even the smallest, fastest players are strong & tough as nails. I've got 2 words for you to look up on YouTube. Jonah Lomu. He would have been the #1 pick in the NFL draft almost any year. Check it out & see what you've been missing.

why do rugby players wear daisey dukes? is it because they're all gay?
know it all
Lmao, if Rugby players were that great they'd be playing American football because American football players get paid. What do Rugby players get paid in? Beer? It's like people who try to tell me UFC is harder than Boxing. If people fighting UFC could box, they would have done it to start with because low tier boxing fights make more money than championship UFC fights. I promise you if Giants walked up to any guy on a Rugby field and offered him 5 million dollars to play for them, he'd quit his team tomorrow.

I'm about 6 foot 200 pounds. i would be considered an average or high end average rugby player as far as size goes. i would be considered Doug Flutie in the NFL. if you don't know who that is, he had to at times jump up before passing the ball to see over the line and when he got hit (tackled) it looked like someone was taking a warm knife through butter. They wear pads because hits in the NFL simulate a car crash at 30-40 mph. I'll admit rugby is a tough sport. try playing football without the proper equipment and your talking about death..... dumb a##

I've played rugby, and it's a great sport! So is Aussie-rules football. Both are tough sports, but - you'll have to take my word for this - they're nothing like American football. If you ever get a chance to see a professional American football game in person, do it. The first thing that will get your attention is the SPEED at which the game is played. Pass receivers and defenders are usually 100-meter dash champions, either at the college level or the Olympic level. Imagine what would happen if two world class sprinters ran at each other at top speed and collided. That's American football. On the line, it can be even worse. Every play is as violent as a car wreck. The guys who are trying to push each other out of the way are "small" at 300 pounds and are more likely to be 350 and up. They run the 40 under 5 seconds and can bench press 500 pounds and up. The "NFL-225" is a standard measure for strength. All players in the NFL can bench press 225 pounds (17.3 stone) multiple times, even the smallest players. Linemen average more than 20 repetitions at 225 pounds. The NFL record is 43 reps. I agree with you that the American football uniform looks ridiculous! I've worn the entire get-up in high school. It still didn't stop me from getting multiple concussions, being knocked cold, and even from being totally paralyzed for a few seconds after getting a "forearm shiver." American football takes its toll. The average lifespan of an NFL player is 55 years - 22 years less than the average American. But probably the biggest difference between rugby, Aussie rules, and American football is that if you tried to play without helmet or pads in the NFL, you'd die.

Ah, another question about the same old same old in the wrong sports section. Just because the Rugby Championship is going on as we speak. Go have a few more pints and enjoy the matches and stay out of the American Football section. We already know how supposedly tough you all are. You need help my friend.
