What will be the deflection (δ) of a aluminum rectangular beam of uniform cross section (7 mm wide x 10 mm high) subject to a 80 N load? The beam is simply supported at both ends and has a span of 300 mm. The load is placed in the middle of the beam. Young's modulus for this aluminum is 69 GPa. 1. 158 mm 2. 1.79 mm 3. 51.4 MPa 4. 1.12 mm Could someone tell me how to do this problem? I have no idea how to approach it.

First, calculate the inertia of your rectangular beam. Next, you can either derive the beam equation for a simply supported beam or, you can look up the equation in the back of a mechanics of materials book. In my Resistance of Materials book by Seely, the equation is given as: 48EIy = Px(3*length^2 - 4x^2) ---> for this case x = length/2 48EIy = P(length/2)(3*length^2 - 4(length/2)^2) = P(length/2)(3*length^2 - length^2) = P*length^3 y = P*length^3/(48EI)
