Having a name is good when hailing a boat on VHF. Having a name that sounds raunchy on VHF is not cceptable, but I have seen quite a few I would not want to call.

It depends on the year the boat was named, some names are wildly popular for a year or several years. There is a search engine that will even tell you what the most popular boat names are now and what they were in years past...Also, in case you didn't know, changing a vessels name is supposed to be bad luck. For top 10 boat names every year go to http://www.boatus.com/names/top10.asp

People who know about boats also know that it's considered bad luck to knowingly name a boat the same name as another boat... has to do with King Neptune and Poiesedin not being able to identify which boat is which. In fact, one of the steps in changing the name of a boat is to make a small paper boat and put the boat's name on it then let it sail off... and you are then one step closer to changing the name of your boat SAFELY.

I do like johnkmaye's answer. It makes a lot of sense. British people do sometimes invent a name that is a mix of the owners' names. This is especially true of couples. "Lynand" is one that I know of; Lynn & Andy's boat.

Seas the Day (for 2006, that is!)
