Question about boats?
-
i have a 1988 bayliner classic that was not properly winterized i was wondering if any one knows if the 5.0 (305) block in the bayliners is a marine block or just a regular chevy block (the block froze and has cracked) and if any one knows any other use full information about bayliner boats and rebuilding the motors and ifs its straight forward like a truck motor or where i can find good information about it thanks....

Answer:
the block is the same as the car block is the difference is in the cooling system on those we changed the engine on one a few years back and the block is the same as a car 305 is,the just use different heads and water pumps on them, there really not that much difference in either engine when it comes down to the bare bones part of it,good luck.

Was the winterization done by a do-it-yourselfer (you or someone else) or was this done by a certified service center for your outdrive? If this was done by a private individual, you're out of luck and will have to foot the bill. Other than Bayliner boats are cheap crap regarding quality, that's about as much info as you're gonna get. I don't think Bayliner provides non-outdrive/engine service parts or info before 1992. However, for the engine and outdrive parts, this information needed can easily be obtained by getting the serial number and model number on the engine and on the outdrive system. Take these serial and model numbers to an OMC service shop if OMC outdrive, or Merc service shop if its a Mercrusier. If winterization was done by a certified service center, I'd take your receipt of the winterization bill and see if you can hold them accountable for their work in footing the bill. If you didn't have that service shop dewinterize it, you need to bring the boat EXACTLY in the condition it was when it cracked and bring your recipt of the winterization from that service shop. The more you mess with the engine, the harder it might be to prove it was their fault. I can't garantee they'll pay for their screwup, but its definitely worth bringing your receipt and explaining your dissatisifcation of them.

As far as the blocks, they are the same.If you are going to use a car block you should change the frost plugs. The plugs for a marine block are brass so they will not rust out.You will also need to use the cam shaft and cylinder heads from the marine engine because they are different also. All the rest of the internal engine parts are the same.On the outside you will need to use everything from your block that was frozen. One other thing to check is,did your exhaust manifolds freeze as well?If so they will need to be replaced too.Good luck.
