Why are bass boats fast?

The basic bas boat has a nearly flat bottom shallow draft hull so it planes or skims on top of the water and that is why they are so fast; deep V hulls cut the water and ride better in rough water. A flat bottom boat is very stable in flat water but a V hull is better for rough water and cutting or going through waves.

The boats are nealy flat and meant for use on calm waters.I think they need all that power to get from one boat dock to the next during competition.

Simply put, it's all about some basic physics: <1> Power to Weight The power output is superior to the weight that it has to push around. This is the same reason why a small light car is more fuel efficient or why a sports car is faster than say a truck with an equally large engine. <2> Planning hull design Planning hulls opposed to displacement hulls means that they are designed to rise up out of the water and travel on top, thus cutting significant amounts of drag. The downside is that they can make for a rougher ride and require a lot more power to stay on plane which means poor fuel economy in comparison. <3> Hull shape the Hull is designed to be flat bottomed as well. More serious waters require vee hulls etc. Though ocean vessels can also have round huls with stablizers. <4> Material Aluminium is 7x stronger than fiberglass and weighs much less. Most larger boats tend to be fiberglass but some are ALU as well. <5> Size Fishing boats are smaller than other planing hulls making them quicker by reducing drag. However displacement hulls BENEFIT in increased length allowing for a higher max speed.

those are performance hulls, referred to as "pad-V". the back 1/3 or so of the bottom of the hull has a "pad", kind of like a a water ski, a few inches wide molded into it. When a bass boater is on plane, he refers to it as being "on pad" because the pad is the only part of the hull in contact with the water. less hull/water contact = less friction = less hydrodynamic drag = more speed. it can lead to "chine walk", a condition where the hull falls over to one side and starts oscillating from chine to chine, a dangerous situation for the inexperienced. 60 mph isn't all that fast for bass boats anymore -- many go 80, 90 +

the boat i want which is a skeeter 21i with a 300 yamaha will top 80 if its not weighed down. The speed basically is the hull design. and they desgined it for speed. and other boats like stroker,gambler,Allison,and bullet go alot faster but they aren't as good for fishing.

Alot lighter + Better hull design for speeds + outboards produce more speed then jets
