How to fix boat throttle?

Bogged down on full throttle 170 mercruiser in a 1985 4 winns anyone been thru this?

  • my brother and i bought pretty much the same boat and this past weekend we'd have full throttle on take off and it would bogg down bad until it surfaced out for both the boats. this didn't always happen though only occasionally. anyone have this problem too or know how to fix it? also can anyone suggest the best pitch on a prop to wake board?

  • Answer:

If I understand you correctly, the engine would bog down when you go full throttle from idle, correct? If so, I had this exact same problem with my 1984 Mercruiser 170 motor. It would hesitate/bog down upon hard acceleration from slow speed or idle. Most likely it is a bad accelerator pump on the carburetor. I replaced the accelerator pump when I rebuilt the carbureter and the problem went away. I did it myself for about $70 for the kit or you can pay a mechanic around $250-$300 to do it for you. Regarding the prop question, I believe the standard on the 170 is a 19" pitch. Here is a great article on how to select your prop - http://www.comprop.com/pickprop.html. Sorry, I don't know much about how it applies to wakeboarding.
