What Is The Difference Between A NRI, OCI And a PIO?
-
Can Indians help me because I am totally baffled...I am fully aware of what the acronyms stand for: NRI = Non Resident Indian OCI = Overseas Citizen Of India PIO = Person Of Indian Origin What is the difference between these? Or are they the same thing? I was born in New Delhi, raised in London...I have a British passport and a British citizenship.....Which of the three would I be classified as? Or would I be classified as all of them?

Answer:
You could be classified as all three. You are a NRI, cos you have lived outside of India for so many years. You need to apply with the Indian consulate for an OCI. With this document you will not need to seek permission or visitor's visa everytime you visit India. This document proves that you have dual citizenship. PIO and OCI are slightly similar. You need to apply for PIO document with Indian consulate. You can apply for PIO or OCI, you do not need both. Please visit Indian consulate website, http://www.cgisf.org/. Click on 'consular services' and then on each individual service to understand elgibility, benefits etc. Hope this helps.

OCI = U have all the rights of an Indian citizen with an exception of buying Agricultural land and cast ur vote. U can stay in India as long as u like with no problem. Expensive than PIO PIO = Same as above but u need to register urself in a Police Station in India if u decide to stay there NRI - U need to be this to apply for the above 2 or ur parents or ur grand parents should be Indians
You cannot be all three. First of all, you are not an NRI. You are a britisher. An NRI is an Indian citizen who resides abroad with a resident Visa of that country. The other 2 explanations are in the thread

A non-resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who has migrated to another country, a person of Indian origin who is born outside India, or a person of Indian origin who resides outside India. Other terms with the same meaning are overseas Indian and expatriate Indian. In common usage, this often includes Indian born individuals (and also people of other nations with Indian blood) who have taken the citizenship of other countries. A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is usually a person of Indian origin who is not a citizen of India. For the purposes of issuing a PIO Card, the Indian government considers anyone of Indian origins up to four generations removed, to be a PIO. [1]. Spouses of people entitled to a PIO card in their own right can also carry PIO cards. This latter category includes foreign spouses of Indian nationals, regardless of ethnic origin. PIO Cards exempt holders from many restrictions applying to foreign nationals, such as visa and work permit requirements, along with certain other economic limitations. The NRI and PIO population across the world is estimated at over 30 million (not including Pakistan, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan diasporas). The Indian government recently introduced the "Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI)" scheme in order to allow a limited form of dual citizenship to Indians, NRIs and PIOs for the first time since independence in 1947. It is expected that the PIO Card scheme will be phased out in coming years in favour of OCI. The Government has announced the launching of a People of Indian Origin Card, which will allow visa free entry to Indian origin people living abroad and give them all the rights enjoyed by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) including purchase of non-agricultural land. 15 million people of Indian origin living abroad will benefit from the Card. Fee for PIO Card is US $ 365.00 for adult and for children below the age of 18 years is US $ 185.00 (effective from September 17, 2007). Validity of new PIO card will be 15 years from the date of issue. However, it would not be issued to people of Indian origin living in Pakistan and Bangladesh. It does not give voting rights to the holders of the Card. It is eligible for the Indians who hold a foreign passport living abroad till the fourth generation. The PIO Card holder would be exempt from registration if his stay in India does not exceed 180 days. However, if the stay exceeds 180 days, the PIO Card holder will have to register within 30 days of the expiry of 180 days with the concerned Foreigners Registration Officer at district headquarters. The right to buy property would not be valid to Jammu & Kashmir. The PIO Card holder would be able to admit their children to educational institution in India under the NRI category. These include the IITs and Indian institutes of Management. They can also benefit from housing schemes of the Life Insurance Corporation, State Governments and other Government agencies.
