What is the suicide rate in Japan?

Does Korea or Japan have the higher suicide rate?

  • I heard Japan has a v. high suicide rate but now some of my friends said Korea is higher? So, which is it and why

    S. Korea, and it is because of the high expectations placed on the society from school-age children all the way up -- Highschoolers study from 7am-2am daily on average and everything is very very test based. Many a high school student has killed him/herself over failure/not doing well enough on the University entrance exams- and even after getting into a good University things don't get much easier with working hours being around 12-14 hours on average. I live in S. Korea- and I love it, but I'm not a native of the country and have it good by being an English teacher, my boyfriend: a native Korean does not have it as good. He will be starting his career this coming summer and it won't be surprising when he comes home 10, 11, 12am when his workday is supposed to end at 7. I'll really only ever see him on Sundays. I think it is Japan. I did this for geography of countries. One top reason for suicide is failing examinations whereby the parents and society will talk ill of you, similarly other such reasons such as teenage pregnancy that would bring disgrace to a person.

South korea has a higher suicide rate than Japan. Japan's suicide rate has actually been dropping recently because the newer generation is not overworked like before,and I think people are starting to value their lives more after the tsunami.Korea unfortunately has the second highest suicide rate in the world,just after lithuania,it's mostly due to the extreme amount of pressure put on people,to look attractive,be the best in school etc.It's also extremely difficult for high-school kids because they barely get any sleep and there is an enormous amount of pressure to score high on their entrance exams,because it determines where they will be in future.
