How do I add a contact from my address book to my friends list, in my messenger?

I want to add a contact in my address book, over to my friends list, in my messenger. I already tried the "Add Feature" but that does'nt work. It only provides for adding people that are not in my messenger list already

just click on add contact at the top of your address book in messenger and type in the email address good luck. c yah..
