How to edit contacts information?

Cannot edit contacts information in Messenger?

• All my contacts in Messenger all have their Yahoo ID displayed. I have the preferences set to display by their nickname. I notice, when I view the contact details I have, that none of them have their nicknames anymore (I had to delete and reinstall an older version because I had problems with the current version). When I try to edit the contact information by inserting a nickname, I get an error pop up saying that I cannot save this information, because I already have a contact with Yahoo ID XXX listed. That's just it: I'm not trying to save a new contact, I'm trying to add a nickname to an existing contact. How do I accomplish this? I'm now using version 7.0..

  How they appear on your messenger list is how they appear in your address book, If you change your address book to how you want it, that will be how it shows up on your messenger.
