How do I setup my yahoo group so that you can only join with a yahoo id and not with any other email address?
-
I have been using yahoo groups since way back when it was called egroups and I am also a yahoo group founder for a handful of different groups. Some of my groups are set to allow anyone to join with any email address instead of having to get a yahoo id. Because of this, my groups are getting lots of people joining with no intention but to spam. Is there any way that I can change this so that you can only join with your yahoo id? Also, will changing this help control spam? If not, what should I do?

Answer:
These three things would help you get some control of spam on your group. 1) The first thing to do is make your group Restricted instead of Public as it now seems to be. Then, new members would have to be approved by you. See my item #3 for what else you could require before approving them. 2) Change your settings to Moderate all members (current ones and new ones) for a long while to get control of what's posted on your group. Spammers will disappear if their messages are moderated and rejected by you. This might take some extra time on your part but will be well worth it. 3) In your group rules, require your members to have a Yahoo ID as a prerequisite for membership and give current members a specific timeframe to get one. If they don't, remove them from group. Also, make that requisite known by including it in the group description. Note: You would not be able to control what email address they would be using on your group. If you have set your group to allow members to hide their email addresses, you cannot change that back.

You may have to go back into the set up for the groups and deselect all addresses you don't want. Then set new parameters on the page that allows new members to join the groups automatically so that a membership in Yahoo is a required field. They can list more than one email but must designate Yahoo for your group. You can use the argument with yes/no or true/false if you have to write the code yourself. A false or no would trigger an error on the page and they can be redirected automatically to enter valid information. While doing this you may have to reload some of the features in the various groups. It is time consuming but is the way to do it. Since you are reentering fields, you can include a "report as spam" hot button that alerts you to potential problems. You can then block access or remove abusers.

The only way I can see to do that is to set it to where you approve all new members..
