What do these Amp settings Mean?

AMP gain on max with no distortion?

  • I have a 800 watt amp and 2 10'' subs from MTX they came grouped in the same box as a starter kit with perfect match amp/sub. It came with a picture of where to turn the gain and other settings for best performance but I wanted it louder. So I turned the gain up listening for distortion in the speakers and before I knew it i was at max power for gain with no distortion at all in the speakers. Is this normal? Does this mean I can get a better amp and get more power to the subs with no distortion?

  • Answer:

What brand of head unit do you have? The voltage output of the signal to the amp may be lower than the lowest setting on the gain control. Here's the best way I've seen as a guide on how to set the gains of an amp. Read it! Study it! Do it! http://www.bcae1.com/gaincon2.htm

the gain is not a volume control, the gain determines the amount of signal your amp receives from the stereo. you wanna get a Professional to do this for you, or you can do it by yourself, it's best to get a test-tone cd, for subs crossed at 80HZ you can get a 60HZ test-tone, and you on for mids and highs if you have crossed all. work with one gain at a time, if you don't have a test-tone cd, play some clean loud music and active all enhancements as EQ, BASS BOOST ect before testing to the desired setting you wanna play on. turn the stereo volume up to 75% at max and them start setting the gain and when you hear some distortion back down a little. setting gains can also be done by a DMM or O-SCOPE ALSO I DON'T RECOMMEND POWERING YOUR SUB WITH MORE THAN THE RMS POWER RATING
