Cheap 800 RMS 4-ohm amp?

Is 800rms too much for a 600 rms sub? And if so Couldn't I simply keep the Amp's Gain Remote At 3/4 up or so?

  • Amp - Boss CH-1500 Class D Mono - 540rms @ 4ohm / 800 rms @ 2 ohm - 1500 peak Sub - (Single) Kicker S12L5 - DVC - 1200 peak / 600 rms Enclosure - Slot Port Vented and Tuned to 35hz

  • Answer:

i would keep the gain at much lower then that, but with Boss amps, I doubt you'll get that much wattage from it.

purify is right either turn the gain to about 1/4 to 1/2 but purify is right again about it being boss you probaly wont get as much out of the amp as you think

It will sound good. Keep the gains low until the sub breaks in (usually 2 weeks). After that you can turn it up a little bit. But nothing drastic until a month has passed.

Although that amp says it is 800w rms that doesn't mean you will actually get that much power. I would be surprised if you got 600w of power from that amp. That doesn't mean you can't still damage your sub. Like the others said, make sure to set the gain correctly. The links below will help you with that. The reason you need to set the gain right is to prevent your amp from clipping. If your amp sends a clipped signal to your sub then it can overpower your sub. This is because a clipped signal is much more powerful then a regular signal. That is what I would worry about the most in your situation. http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=143 Michael G, you don't need to break in your sub. You can turn it up right out of the box and not have to worry about damaging your sub. Good Luck!!!

Considering the combination, you probably won't overpower the sub. I'd recommend using the gain in it's proper intention which is to match the signal given by the head unit. People that turn up the gain with the intention of using it as a volume control end up blowing their subs because they subject them to clipping.
