Is it normal for my amp to get a little hot?

Why does my amp get so hot?

  • after about 20min my amp gets really hot, i dont wanna hurt anything so i turn down the volume until it cools. i kno amps usually get warm but mine has good venelation and it still gets hot as hell. what can i do about this?

    Its probably being pushed to it limited ohm capacity.1 option would raised your ohm level on your speakers,but you will lose some power.Also,its hard to really tell you any other info because we dont know what class of amp you have example: a/b or D or A or B or even T for the knowlegdable ones etc..Assuming that amp is hooked up correct,the you might consider building a shroud or cover (or even open) and install a 12volt fan.just install a circulating fan the blows along the amps heatsink.EVEN if the amp already has an internal one in it.Cant ever have to much ventilation.

Try turning down the gain and/of the bass boost if your amp has one.Could be running your subs at a lower ohm, if you are running your subs at 2 ohm(for example)your amp puts out more power,thus running hotter.also your amp might not be suitable for lower ohms.

Your amp just has a very insufficient way of using energy and its wasting most of the energy by turning it into heat. I would suggest that you check the wiring, but you should probably get a new amp.

I'm assuming your talking about a car amp? If you can imagine all the power going into the amp in volts and the amount of watts that it is putting out then you might get an idea why. Good ventilation is key. They are designed to operate under very hot conditions but keeping them cooler makes them last longer. Just put your hand on a 100 watt light bulb and then do it on a 1000 watt bulb the more power the hotter it gets. The only way is good air circulation, forced circulation is better other than that I don't know of any way to stop the heat.
