Answer:
They get warm. Unless it's in a cryogenic chamber that's pretty much a given. Even cheap amps have thermal protection that will shut down if the heat is excessive. I forget the nubmers, but I think shut off temp is generally in the 160 deg F range. As long as they have a couple inches above and to all 4 sides to breathe they should be happy. Some people have gone to the trouble of installing computer fans to circulate some air, but I doubt the improvement is significant.

amp must be where air can vet threw so it dont over eat and if its overheat might be that the amp is going bad or you probably need a bigger one for your subs/speakers
Mount it so that the heatsink fins are vertical, preferably with the output transistors at the top (since they are the hottest), but since most people won't open the amp up to find out where the output transistors are, or might not know which ones they are, just mount it vertical. In the case of my amp they are closest to the end with the RCA jacks so it is vertical, RCAs pointed up, speaker and power connections pointed down. If the heatsink fins are vertical natural convection will cool the amp more than just having it lay flat on the floor.

You can easily add a computer case fan. It runs on 12V, just like your amp. All you really need is to run the positive lead from the fan to the remote wire lead, and the negative to ground, but if you want to do it the right way you should install a relay to turn on the fan. I have an 80mm case fan mounted on top of my sub amp and it keeps it considerably cooler than before. I used these instructions as a guide. http://www.bcae1.com/coolfans.htm

As long as it's the right number of watts to the sub, and it's not too big or too small keeping it in a well ventilated area will help it a lot. an amp will get hot, but if you think it's getting too hot, try checking your wire sizes in and out, and where you have it.
