What is the best speaker wire for sub woofers?

What size speaker wire for sub? And couple of other sub/amp questions?

  • I have a hifonics 1600 RMS amp wired at 1 ohm pushing a MA Audio HK12X2 sup thats rated at 1500 RMS and 3000 peak. I have a couple of questions.. 1)Whats the smallest wire i can get away with using from the enclosure terminals to the sub and from each voice coil? The terminal on the sub are the screw in type not the push in type so not alot of room to cram large wires. 2)The manufacurer suggests sealed box dimensions of 1.5-2.25 but the shop that installed and build the box built it to 1.07, according the the formula of HxWxD/1728. So will it hurt the sub any if the box dimensions are smaller? 3)I was told by the shop that the amp is waaay under powered for that sub being that the sub is 3000 watts peak. I always thought the you match the amp and sub according to the RMS which in this case is fine being that the amp is 1600 rms and the sub being 1500.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you live in Canada, head to s princess auto. I bought all monster cable wires there, for dirt cheap. My quad RCA cable was $6.99, and I seen the same model cable on ebay for $60. I got 10 feet of 10 gauge sub cable for like $4. This is the RCA cable I paid $7 for: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5600

1)Whats the smallest wire i can get away with using from the enclosure terminals to the sub and from each voice coil? The terminal on the sub are the screw in type not the push in type so not alot of room to cram large wires. 12 AWG will be fine. You can use crimp style forked spades for the connection. I would crimp and solder the connector. 2)The manufacurer suggests sealed box dimensions of 1.5-2.25 but the shop that installed and build the box built it to 1.07, according the the formula of HxWxD/1728. So will it hurt the sub any if the box dimensions are smaller? Performance can be compromised. A solution is to use polyfil to trick the sub to behave as if it were in a bigger box (see below). 3)I was told by the shop that the amp is waaay under powered for that sub being that the sub is 3000 watts peak. I always thought the you match the amp and sub according to the RMS which in this case is fine being that the amp is 1600 rms and the sub being 1500. You are right, the shop is wrong. Steer clear of places like this. __________________ Polyfil: Pollyfil is a sound absorption, dampening fiber that will deepen bass, provide cleaner midrange, tone down any unwanted reverberation and improve the dynamic extension of any speaker system. It does this by eliminating standing waves, which is something like an echo inside the box. The result is tighter, more accurate bass. It also helps to give a flatter frequency response to the overall sound, which is good. Besides this, it also helps reduce the vibration of the box, which results in less distortion. Damping also increases subwoofer efficiency by dissipating some energy that affects the sub, particularly the voice coil. Pillow polyfill and fiberglass insulation are common, though polyfill is a lot easier on your skin. Polyfill also "tricks" a sub into thinking it is in a bigger box. Most sealed and vented enclosures require 1/2 lb. of dampening material per cubic foot of internal enclosure space. For best results it is recommended to loosely fill the material throughout the enclosure avoiding port or vent openings . You can find polyfill at any craft store or the craft section in Wal-Mart.

Yes 12 gauge would be the way to go with speaker wire, i am also a personal fan of hifonics. I had a 1200 watt hifonics before and it was definatly what it was rated at. I had a friend of mind test it to see what it was pushing out, and it was alittle over 1200. Most of the time people at these shops just try to get you to buy more crap so they can make money. You definatly do go by rms because let me tell you if you push 3000 watts into that sub it will be fried. Alot of the time you want to have an amp that can push a little over the rms into the sub. It generally gives better sound because the less you have the gain up the less distortion you will hear especially with these digital amps.

ur amp is fine, but dont turn ur gain up past halfway, a smaller box can damage the speaker, and if u can for wires to the speaker anything bigger than a 12 gauge, i wouldnt go smaller than that

(1)Use wire no smaller than 12 gauge.(2) Your box is too small and your bass response is not going to be very good in that box. That box will hit high frequency bass but lacks the volume needed to reproduce the low frequencies you are looking for. You should NEVER go under the manufacturers minimum enclosure volume recommended. When a woofer is placed into a box that is too small the bass response curve moves up into the higher frequencies and your ability to reproduce low frequencies is greatly diminished. You probably notice that your woofer pumps like crazy but there is not much sound. (3) Hifonics amps usually produce close to what they claim so it should be plenty.

1) forget for that funny wattage numbers. it is not real at all. They are not able to push more than 1200-1500Watts of power to 6" very high quality voice coil speakers today, so they wont be able to do it for hifonics. It will burn your speaker surely if you push this power to the speaker. some company cheated :-) 2) the thickness of speaker cables depends on impedance load. You have 1Ohm, so When I count it, I get 5 square milimeters (what gauge count is it?) to work it fine. (amp to speaker terminal)
