What can I do with an old speaker?

Can old speaker wire hurt my sub?

  • The speaker wire I'm using from my amp to sub is what was still attached to the sub when I bought it, so I'm not really sure how old it is. For a little background information I have had problems with my amp going into protect mode. My sub is super quiet, then when I turn the volume up my sub will be loud (I guess it's clipping) for a second then the amp goes into protect mode and it shuts off. Could this be caused by the speaker wire in any way?

  • Answer:

Yes it is possible if the wire coating is brittle and or cracked in any way can lead to crossing out. shortening out? but i would check your gain on your amp.if your amps clipping it may be because your gain is set to hi therefore over powering your sub .. so id get some new proper size wire and check your gain it probably shouldn't be past about a 1/4 turn about 9 oclock? if you think of the gain as looking like a clock. make sure amp isnt touching metal? Most important a bad ground can do this also, you must have a ground to bare metal no painted surfaces and it must be tight.need more help drop me a line.glad to help.
