Can you discover what location an email has been sent from, from an IP address?

I'm being accused of sending threatening emails and they say it has come from my college from the IP address. Can they know this or has it been made up cause their trying pin it on me.

Answer:
From the "Received" headers in an email, it's easy to tell which computer first dispatched an email. Unfortunately tracing the sender isn't that simple. Millions of emails a day are sent from compromised computers without their owners knowing about it. Hidden processes controlled from afar send email after email, and that computer's address will appear as the email's originator. If I were you, I'd ask to see the evidence against you, and then show it to someone who knows about such things. I would recommend against the advice to traceroute (or tracert) to the originating host. It won't tell you as much as looking up the IP address on http://www.arin.net/whois/ and may draw attention to yourself if that address turns out to be compromised.

How many people go to your college? I'm sure there's a way of seeing who sent the mail. I would advise changing the password to your e-mail address if you can, and don't tell anyone.

It's quite easy to trace an IP address, assuming you're using XP go to START<RUN then type in "tracert xxxx" where xxxx is the full IP number. The problem with college systems is they all use the same IP number because they're on the same static network, so you could have several thousand computers, all with the same external IP number, and probably identical internal IP numbers too.

you need to see the email with full headers shown. That will show you the actual IP address which may be within the group allocated to the college. The college network people should be able to identify where it was sent from .

Usually many computers can be used in places like college or internet cafe and still use the same ip address. It might be difficult to pin down who sent the email (though there are ways to pin down if u hv a track of who were logged on during that time. There are ip finders available that give you complete details of the name and company with address details that were used when registering for internet. One such tool can be found in: http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm
