Is it possible to use an animated pic as an icon?

I was thinking about doing one with him on one of his signature moves, where he is standing on his toes, you know, white socks, fedora, glove and all? How should i go about doing this? this is not a peice of art i am selling or anything just for an assighment...

It worked before on my old screen name but ever since I have had my new one it doesn't show my pic of my b/f and I. It shows my av, it will show my buddy icon from smiley central but every pic i use shows up black. They are the same pics I used before...
