What's the contract job?

Im moving to London in August. Would it be easier to get a job before i go or when i move down there?

  • Im moving in with friends in London from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Preferablly, i would like to have a job signed and sealed for when i get there, but im not sure how easy it will be for me, i.e travelling to interviews and things. My problem is if i have to travel all the way down for an interview, and dont get the job, im back to square one and will have to travel to others until i receive a job offer. I wondered would it be easier to get a temporary job on a month by month contract for when i get down there, then look for something when im there? And if temping at first is a better way to do it, whats the best way to go about getting a temporary job? I've lived in Huddersfield all my life and never moved so im pretty unsure. Thanks so much in advance.

If money isn't go to be an issue from the start then you might have a better chance at getting a job when you get there, as you can walk into agencies/shops/bars etc and ask face to face rather than just calling them. You should still look for jobs now though, as it's a difficult time to be looking for work and so you shouldn't slack off for any length of time! Put your friend's address on your applications or the employers won't look twice at it. If you are out of work at the moment and claiming any benefits then the job centre will pay for your travel costs to interviews. I did this a couple of times, and all they have to do is call the employer to confirm the interview and then they give you a free train ticket (don't know how it works with a car). Also, wait until about July, then go down for a couple of days and visit as many employment agencies, shops etc as you possibly can! Another thing you could try, as you've got a couple of months, is to apply for every single company in Huddersfield you can think of that has one in London - like retail stores, supermarkets, Wetherspoons! Then you can get a transfer to the London one which is a much easier process than applying from step 1. That'll help you out to begin with, and when you've moved and are settled you can start looking for something that's more your ideal job without the stress and pressure of having to do it straight away.

If it's easy for you to get a temping job, then yes, I'd advise you to do that. But why not apply for a few permanent jobs now, and see if you get an interview? I'm told it's not easy to get jobs in London nowadays.

What do you do? As you'll have friends to stay with in London, you won't have the hassle of finding accom which you'll find is shockingly expensive! so is commuting. It's always easier to get a job when you have one for some odd reason. Temping is ok but know that you really do have to chase any of the agencies you register with, call them every morning and find out if they have anything for you because unless you have a skill or profession that is in demand and pays a lot (they get generous commissions) they don't always call you back. Your friends in LOndon should be able to give you advice on this too. Good luck.
