Where is a good place to live outside of London but no more than 30 mins from Waterloo station?
-
Im currently living in Newbury and looking to move nearer london to start a new job. Need reccommends on places to live outside of London, but within easy reach to Waterloo station. Ideally the place has good train links, no more than 30 mins on the train and a nice 'green' area, any ideas?

Answer:
Very green and leafy: Richmond, Esher, Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames. They are all on the fast Waterloo line but they are very expensive though. Surbiton also has some nice corners as does Wimbledon. For somewhere a bit cheaper, Kingston-on-Thames. All have direct train links to Waterloo. Sevenoaks isn't on the Waterloo line.

Richmond or Twickenham are both less than 20 minutes from Waterloo, have great road access to the countryside and are in a borough with more green space than built up areas - Richmond Park, Kew Gardens, Bushy Park, Hampton Court Park, Old Deer Park etc. Best value in the borough is probably Hampton or Teddington, also just 30 minutes from central London on a slower train route, but cheaper and more village-like in their feel. There are some places on the Reading Line which are just about 30 minutes from London on fast trains. Staines is nicer than its name suggests, Guildford is popular, Woking has fast, frequent trains - but as with most of the suburban towns you will not be living in a rural setting if you live anywhere near a station.

Staines is around 30 minutes from Waterloo by train - some parts of it are quite nice - down along the Thames for instance (some parts are not) or if you are prepared to up your journey time just a little you could live in or around Windsor and Datchet. The railway runs direct from Windsor through Staines and up to Waterloo and is a quite frequent service.

The nearest place that comes to mind is Sevenoaks, Kent. It has a fast service to Waterloo East. It's a lovely town but very expensive. You could try Fleet in Hampshire. It's about 40 minutes. Basingstoke is affordable but it's further out. It's dsurrounded by lovely countryside but the town is drab.

Richmond, Twickenham, Epsom, Ewell would all be suitable
