Are London hostels safe?

  • I'm trying to travel to London next December and am debating on staying in a chain hotel or a hostel. I am just wondering if my stuff is safe if I leave it in a hostel? I don't want my clothes or anything like that to be stolen.

    A zone 1-6 travelcard costs about a tenner. This gives you unlimited travel within quite a large area. Why is this relevant? Booking in to somewhere in zone 6 is a lot cheaper than getting somewhere to stay in central London. Travellodge rooms can be had for £19 a night booked well in advance at places like East Croydon or Ilford. It's only a short train ride into central London. You would probably be buying a central area travelcard anyway and it's only a couple of quid more for the 1-6 version, so the saving on accommodation cost is not to be sniffed at.

If you decide on hostels, you best check the reviews on the hostels and select one that has good to excellent reviews. Keep your things tidied away in your pack or suitcase and use the lockers provided. London is an expensive city, there are many expensive hotels, even the cheaper chains are way more expensive because it is London. But there are also a lot of cheaper options, in hostels, in bed and breakfast accommodation and in small hotels that are not expensive. In any of the cases read the reviews. Cheap does not always mean bad, but it does happen.

Check in to a hotel. I don't think you'll be bunking with assholes.

I stay at the Picadilly backpackers every time i go to London and never had a problem. They provide a cupboard for your property and all you need to take is a padlock. I even take my laptop with me and it's safe.
