What's the best way to purchase a train ticket from Gatwick Airport?

I am trying to figure the best way to purchase my tickets. As I am arriving internationally, and will have to clear passport control, I don't know exactly which time to choose for an online purchase. Should I wait until I am at the airport? And, can I purchase for any of the rail operators (Capital Connect, Southern, etc.) at the airport? I am finding the whole process somewhat confusing!
Answer:

Gatwick does have a station but it will only take you to Waterloo or Victoria either direct or via many stations on the way. If you just want a ticket to somewhere on that line, then buy it on the day (it's cheaper after 9.30). If you're travelling further afield (such as to the Midlands, North England) then I advise you to buy tickets online beforehand to save money and guarantee a seat.
