How to study abroad in London?

How will I be received in London when I study abroad there for 4 months?

  • I am a 19 year old American. Well, I will be 20 when I go abroad. But I'm just curious how locals and everyone around London perceives Americans. I would not necessarily be a tourist since I am living there for 4 months (I know tourists can be annoying) but I have never been to Europe so I haven't experienced this so called "hostility" towards Americans that we hear about over here... any insight on this? Thanks.

  • Answer:

This hostility thing is a load of bull don't worry. With any country you are going to get a few jerks who hate anyone from other countries, but thankfully they are very much in the minority. Most of us Brits like you Americans, just be polite and respectful and you will be treated as such in return. You have no need to worry, I promise you you will make a lot of friends over here.

I am 21 years old and American. I studied abroad last summer and spent a few days in London. It was fine, there was no hostility toward me. Just go and have fun. London pubs are great!

I think you will enjoy your stay in the UK. London is the most cosmopolitan of cities and we hear every accent in the world. No hostility. Have a great time.

You'll have no problems. There's thousands and thousands of people of all nationalities living, working or studying in London...you won't stand out like you think you will...you'll just blend in with everyone else

london will welcome you with open arms, the uk is a very tolerant country and only reacts to those with oppressive views

You should be fine as long as you are a nice person,we tend to take people as we find them. The hostility is towards your government and those small minded individuals that know nothing outside of america but are quick to put other cultures down. I hope you enjoy your stay in London and make some good friends.

Some will love you...some will seem as if they hate you.....most will not notice you. What can I say. Similar to the experience I had on North Carolina some years ago. It was like to American War of Independence was recent history !. And in California I had a hard time because one guy thought the British should have supported the US in Vietnam and blamed me. On the whole I find most people are pretty decent when you get to know them whatever the location.

I would say try to blend in and keep your political views under wraps. All cultures have their share of crazies...

You're worrying about nothing. Every nationality is represented and welcomed in Britiain, esspecially in London. There are a minority of xenophobes and racists but I doubt you'll have any problems. Those negative types exist in all countries. Just be yourself and you'll be fine.
