May have inadvertently dodged a fare on train service London?
-
I was recently in London and I was trying to buy a ticket but the person behind the counter had very bad english and probably couldn't understand my accent (Irish). There person told me to got to "platform x", so I thought I'd have to buy the ticket there. There wasn't a booth there and i would have missed my train if i had to walk back. I've never been in London or the UK before and I'm not that familiar with major train stations. I had an oyster travel card with me (not in my name, a relations one) and scanned it on the walkway (it wasn't a shutter, just something you walk by). I got to my destination and scanned my card to get out. Then scanned it again to get in but the conductor said it was out od credit. So I bought a ticket for my next interchange. There was a conductor on my next train and was checking everyone. My question is, what would have happened if there was a conductor on my first train. If I just showed my oyster card would that have been enough. How would they know if there was enough credit on it? After reading about that "Fare dodger" in Scotland it occurred to me I might have dodged a fare without realising it.

Answer:
It's lucky that I live up north. At night I never pay the fare and if the conductor were to come on, I just pay him the normal price - like nothing was the matter. I've seen that Scottish video as well and thought they were all cnuts.

You must take care in London and south east England. Train conductors and ticket inspectors are equipped with Oyster readers. If you don't have a ticket or a correct ticket or enough money on your Oyster card, you will be fined £20 plus the cost of the journey, and you may be prosecuted

The conductor has a device to electronically read the Oyster card.
Evening all.
If you showed an oyster card NOT in your own name. It would be confiscated from you and you would be fined. They have little machines that tell them
