Yes London is safe. And an exciting city. But if you want to know which area then that is difficult because just giving a name does not tell you everything. You can have a very nice area and a few streets away is an area that you would not choose . All under the same name . For example Islington has some very fashionable parts and some less so. Look at a map of London and find Regents Park. The areas north of there are mostly very good. But as a student, can you afford to live there ? That's going to be your challenge. To find a nice area at a price you can afford. And it will depend on which university you are going to and choose an area that makes travel easy for you each day. An interesting puzzle .

London is a perfectly safe City and a truly amazing place to live. I grew up in London and I am very happy to call it my home. Deciding on where you want to live in London is like deciding a favourite song, there is so much to choose from! Each area of London has its own unique style, music scene and of course price range. In general, avoid the following, Peckham, Croydon, Tottenham, Hackney - all a bit rough. Good areas to look at are, Putney, Fulham, Clapham, Kennington, East Dulwich, Greenwich, Hampstead, Camden, Belsize Park, Chalk Farm, Maida Vale. Shoreditch and most of East London is quite trendy but in my opinion is all a bit weird and alternative, if you like people who dress weird and think that any music in the charts is utter trash then you will probably love Shoreditch. London sadly is expensive but is really worth it. Transport in London is incredible, the tube system is crowded and hot, BUT it is such a convenient way of getting around, there are also hundreds of bus systems! Hope that helps!

Apply for university or college accommodation. A lot safer if you have new friends in the dorm and go out together. Join university trip or bus tour. Go out in a group for the first few months, to get used to the environment and transport system. A lot of tourists around, but still, you need to be very careful alone. Some areas have pickpocket (thief) and drunk junkies. It is a big city, so people may ignore you even if you scream for help. They might think that you are fooling around with your friends (the thief or robber)

Life in a large city is the same Worldwide , common sense is essential and you will be fine.

I agree with Adam. I also think London is the safest big city in the world. I mean I'm a student and I usually work nights and return from work around 2ish in the morning and I still usually see police patrols in the streets making sure everything is safe.
