What are the bus fares in London?

London bus fares increasing every year?!!?!?

  • every year london bus and transport overall fares increase. why is this? each year. im a londoner and i remember the days for a single fare, childs use to be 40p and adults 70p. if they increase transport, work pay should increase too. it gets very annoying. why does this happen each year? ive seen signs on london bus stops that they are increasing fares from 2010 jan

  • Answer:

London bus fares are some of the cheapest in the UK!!!!! Child's fare - firstly all kids under 11 when accompanied by an adult travel for FREE. Under 16's who live in London and have a photo oyster travel for FREE. With a Freedom Pass, all over 60's travel on the buses after 9:30am for FREE. If you receive income support you are given travel on London buses for FREE. Currently you can travel on one bus from Central London to Croydon for a pound. Bargain I say. In Aberdeen it's £1.70 to travel a few miles. Name me one thing which has stayed the same price every year? I remember when a bag of crisps was 5p! lol.

Lol I remember when children could go anywhere on london buses for 2p!! They hike the prices to make bigger profits! Which is a shame because I would get rid of my car if public transport was cheaper - where I live a trip to the local town for myself and my son costs £5 and they don't do return fares anymore - the same trip takes 7 minutes in my car!

I remember them times too, but there are a number of reasons that fares keep rising: - Drivers pay - Fuel cost - Replacement of old buses with more energy-efficient models - Implementation of new routes - Maintenance of depots and routes - Increasing numbers of "bus only" lanes - Increased free usage by U16 (reducing the "school run" traffic jams) If you use an OysterCard, January will see the first rise in single fares since 2007 (I think) so it doesn't necessarily happen every year (although for tube journeys, it does tend to!).

The rises are due to inflation and the increasing costs of fuel. This is happening all over the country and not just in London. Instead of encouraging people to take buses it kind of puts them off, however, travelling by car is no better either with the rising cost of fuel the average driver is spending more each month to fill up the car. Most transport authorities do offer passes and if you use the bus regularly you'd be better off buying the pass instead of paying for individual fare stages. Most of the time the price of these passes is frozen to encourage people to buy them.

Sir Pete

yes, as they are everywhere in britain.

because they know that we will buy it we never strike like they do we pay for them so pay or use bike that will be their answer

I don't believe in that 'Cockney' He doesn't sound real somehow. LOL Following the last mayor creating huge increases in the number of buses being run, new routes, increasing fuel costs, wage rises etc bus fares are going up; however the rise is about 10 times greater than the inflation rate. Like all Tories Mayor Boris detests buses and the people who travel on them which is why at the same time as hiking fares there will be a 5% reduction in bus mileage in 2010. (Although the bus companies who operate the buses under contract to TFL obviously make a profit) the network as a whole has always lost money. Of course that is irrelevant because the value of good public transport to the London economy and the lives of Londoners, is immesurable. Dear Londoners you were fools to vote out Ken Livingstone

the fares are going up on saturday 2nd January weekly bus passes will go up tp £16:60 and a daily bus pass on oyster will go up 10pence .the main thing to remember is that all fares will be cheaper on oyster

EVERYTHING goes up in bloody price every bleedin' year, cöck- NOT just bleedin' bus fares! By the way, son- UP THE ARSENAL! Peace and love! Be lucky! :)

Costs go up, subsidies are reduced, and they insist in paying over the odds for modernisation that should have been done years ago, and all this costs money ... simple really.
