What is Christmas like?

What would traffic be like on the M25 on Christmas Eve or Christmas day?

  • I'm looking to travel to Reading from Essex for Christmas Day, I'm just trying to decide when to do it. I could either leave at some time during Christmas Eve (tomorrow), I was thinking possibly during the early evening? Or I could travel early on Christmas Day... Anyone had any experience of traffic conditions over these two days?

  • Answer:

Christmas Eve should be very busy but hopefully moving although you can never tell. . Early Christmas Day much quieter. It builds up about midday but normally fairly good early on. For easy driving I would choose Christmas Day. Fill up beforehand because lots of petrol stations close on Christmas day.

I would expect a less than normal traffic as much of the commercial traffic will be off the roads. Many travellers will be leaving Friday and all day Saturday so not the usual last minute mad rush. try these two sites trafficreport.org.uk and trafficengland.com. The automobile association also has a site you can access from your mobile phone. Google road reports for others one accesses cameras so you can see what traffic is before venturing out. Drive safe leave early and enjoy the holidays.

Christmas Day is typically very quiet on the roads. If you depart before 9:30am you will find the motorway journey particularly easy. Christmas Eve, being a Saturday this year, will probably be busy with last minute shoppers and families driving towards relatives' houses for a couple of nights stay over the Christmas period

Even so, you're asking someone to predict the future. It's just not gonna happen is it. EDIT: That's why I said even so, meaning if anyone did have experience.. etc it's not relevant. The weather is different this year for a start, surely a big difference. Will clear roads mean more people? You can't predict exactly what it'll be like.

Doubting Thomas

Traffic will likely be extremely heavy and you'll be severely delayed.
