What is there to do in London in the summer?

What footwear do I need to live in London for the winter and spring/summer?

  • Myself, my 5 year old daughter and my husband will be moving to London from Feb 1 to end of Aug 6th. What type of shoes do each of us need? We will not have a car. Do Londoners really wear rubber boots a lot? (I hear they are called Wellies.) Here in Alberta, Canada, they are only worn for the wettest days and usually only children, as they are pretty unfashionable. Can I just bring a nice pair of moderately waterproof leather low-heel "fashion boots" instead? And if I do need "wellies", should I buy them in Canada or London? Our selection is quite pitiful, but the cost ranges from $15 to $85 (roughly 10 to 58 pounds). Also, what clothes? Do we all need to bring true rain jackets? Does vinyl count? :) Does Feb require an actual winter jacket, or can I get away with a trench coat or fall jacket? Lastly... any tips on NOT looking like a tourist? Blending with the locals, probably living in the Maida Vale area. Besides the obvious of not slinging a camera around my neck :) Thanks!

  • Answer:

There is a popular misconception among visitors to these shores that we walk around up to our ankles in water every day! The shoes that you wear in Alberta will be fine. II've lived and worked in London. Nobody walks around in Wellies. It's not all that cold. If the temperature drops to freezing or below, it rarely stays that low during the daylight hours. Layers of clothing are the answer with a waterproof jacket. However, it doesn't rain all the time! We have beautiful sunny days too. Even in the winter.

I live in London , so your goings to be walking around if you want to not look like a tourist and fit in with the londoners shoes here are my suggestions (( this is what I wear anyway most of the time )) wellies they are fashionable just get a pretty pair in London prices of wellies can range from about £12 , brogues (type them into Google a lot of people wear them down here ) boots lace up of zip up mainly with a leather texture , and ugg boots . For clothes I think you should bring a black rain coat then you will blend into the crowd but you all definatly need a coat of some sort it can get very cold down here and you want to wrap up warm . Finally if you don't really want to look like a tourist I would recommend that if you buy things like I love London merchandise from the cheap market stools that you don't wear it all over the place because this will definitely look touristy :) have fun in London, Hope this helps :3

You will be rained on. A lot. What you choose to do about that in terms of shoes and clothing is up to you, but there's a reason the stereotypical English person carries an umbrella. If they go a month without rain at any time of the year, the Brits consider that a drought and start restricting water usage (I kid you not). Wellies would be a bit much for city wear, but not entirely inappropriate. Consider galoshes instead. Prices in Canada are probably lower than in England, so bring what you reasonably can with you. Hard to say what the temperatures will be, but February is generally cold. I've seen 20 F in January and snow in April in London, but those are extremes. Nothing much wrong with looking like a tourist. The Brits are generally friendly and helpful. Besides, your Canadian accent is going to give you away. Save money by getting London Transport travel passes, by the month if you can manage it. Public transport is excellent and the passes make it cheaper and even more convenient. Additional: Possibly my misconception, but I think galoshes are essentially rubber slippers that go over your regular shoes, suitable for walking in the rain or snow, but usually removed when you get to work or home. Wellies are a waterproof boot that I tend to associate with farmers and those who work outdoors, but there are colorful, reasonably fashionable versions these days.
