Where are some good places to live in London for a young professional?

Good Places to live with good links to london?

  • Right, a little background about me; I'm a 19 year old female business management student studying in Guildford (University of Surrey) I will be graduating in 2013 and want to get my own place. Bearing in mind that I will be a 21 year old, and probably will be looking for a 1 bed (or 2 bed..) HOUSE (not flat!) with an approx budget of 150k, where are good value areas to live with good links to london? At the moment I'm thinking Dartford, Gravesend, Bexleyheath, Erith areas of Kent, however I'm not sure if these are good areas.. maybe a little rough? The places I'm considering are; Essex Kent Surrey However, probably not Surrey as I live here now and know that it is expensive! I will not consider living in London or greater london because I don't believe you get value for money here.

  • Answer:

I used to live in Dartford. Many people say it's now full of Chavs but it had nice parts and a nice little town centre. A few of my colleagues lived in Dartford (our office was in Greater London). We all liked it. It was the best value for housing close to London.

Try this for a reality check: http://www.londonpropertywatch.co.uk/avg_prices.html This is the average prices for houses within the London & the suburbs. There are properties for under £150k, but they are mainly apartments/ flat. Value for money is all about what is acceptable for you. Try using a site like www.rightmoves.com or www.findaproperty.com The further out from the centre you get, the more footage you will get for your money. While I wish you luck, I would suggest that you start small, and work your way up to a house. Else, find yourself a lodger?

? is correct Bexleyheath and Erith are technically Greater London and not Kent, The London Borough of Bexley! However, I do not think that you should swear off Greater London just yet, The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham offers the best value for money of anywhere in Greater London (even Bexley), you can get a decent three bedroom semi (or end of terrace but their the same in my book) 5-10 minutes from Dagenham Heathway or Becontree tube stations for around £160,000, and it's a direct tube to The City on the District Line from there.

you do realise that Bexleyheath and Erith are IN Greater London?!

Essex. But you'll need to live outside of any of the towns so you'll need a car.

If you are looking go for budget apartments near London (http://www.apartotels.com/) and for go for cheap hotels in London (http://www.discountcityhotels.com/)

Jack's answer is misleading. There are no tube stations near Dartford, but there are frequent trains from Dartford to London Bridge/Charing Cross/Victoria. Obviously the places outside London are not on the tube network but they all have good fast rail links to central London. Dartford is the best of the places you mention. The others are rather grotty. Some parts of Guildford particularly around Guildford London Road Station as opposed to the main station are more downmarket and not as expensive as the rest of the town, Might be worth looking around Dorking and Redhill in Surrey too. Borough Green, Swanley and Orpington in Kent are worth a look too. The market is very down at present. Its often worth making a cheeky low offer on flats particularly if the owners are caught in a chain and desperate to sell
