Visiting LONDON for a day. . .?
-
I'm staying in London for a day and half and will be staying around Victoria Station. I was wondering what are somethings to do that aren't the typical touristy stuff. I have already been to London (about a year ago) and saw all of that and I would like to maybe go somewhere quiet to relax and take in everything. Any ideas?? Also I know I have been to London before but I'm not an expert on how to get around. I'm staying at this best western by Victoria Station and was wondering if there was anything nearby. Thanks!

For a more relaxing day you could visit Richmond upon Thames. There is a large Royal Park and you can also take a walk beside the River Thames. For a slightly more "lively" atmosphere you should take a look at Covent Garden. Formally a wholesale fruit and vegetable market with a history dating back hundreds of years, it has now been transformed with many shops, restaurants etc. and is a very interesting day out. Please check out the two web sites below. http://www.coventgardenlife.com/ http://www.visitrichmond.co.uk I am an ardent car user so I cannot advise on public transport (sorry), however both of these locations are quite close and should not present a problem.

Climb the Monument. If you're fit, don't mind heights and love views, it's pretty fantastic; usually fairly tourist-free as well. Chislehurst Caves, just out in the Kent suburb of Chislehurst might be worth a visit if you have time to spare and don't mind using the train. They were used as air raid shelters by local people during the Second World War, some of whom took to living there permanently when their homes were bombed. Hamstead and Hamstead Heath - lovely posh little village atmosphere on the highstreet, and the Heath makes for good walking. Cemeteries - you don't have to be goth to appreciate them. London boasts some rather magnificent cemeteries, many of them architecturally significant. the aptly named 'Magnificent Seven' - Nunhead, Brompton, Highgate, Kensal Green, West Norwood and Tower Hamlets are especially recommended. Nice for wandering and especially for photgraphy. Shopping is always a good one - though don't expect relaxing, and don't shop on Oxford Street. Try Covent Garden, Regent Street, Bond Street and Knightsbridge for good-quality fashion, designer names and nice atmosphere. Markets - Spitalfields (clothes, trinkets, food, antiques, junk), Borough (food), Petticoat Lane (clothes, antiques, retro), Peckham (food, bric-a-brac) and London Fields (food, trendy accesories) are all great. Smaller museums and galleries, off the beaten path and not usually visited by the majority of tourists might interest you as well. The Hunterian Medical Museum at Lincoln's Inn, the Foundling Hospital at Corem Fields, The Horniman Museum at Forest Hill, Dulwich Picture Gallery in Dulwich Village and Wellcome Trust at Euston I recommend. Look for further details online to see if you like the look.

I have never been to london , but I wish I could I love to travel , you are so lucky, why would you want to find a place to relax , if I was in london , I would want to find adventure and romance , I would want to walk around and explore, thats more fun than knowing where you are going, and if you do need to find a place to relax , you could try the top of the hotel building , so you can sit on a chair on the roof and soak up the beauty of london, or ask your parents or ask the front desk person to give you a map. Have FUN!
